Have you ever wanted to write a children’s book but felt stuck on where to begin? Maybe you have a love for storytelling, but the “big idea” just isn’t coming to you. The good news? You don’t need a grand, elaborate concept to start writing. Some of the best picture book ideas come from the smallest, most everyday moments. The trick is learning to see the magic in the ordinary.

Inspiration Is All Around You

Great stories often start with something simple—a conversation, a quirky habit, or even a favorite food. The key is to notice these details and ask yourself, What if?

Take Poet’s Adventure: The Unknown Treasure, for example. This story was inspired by two real-life dogs, Poet and Guthrie, who left a lasting impression with their adventurous spirits and love for watermelon. Their names and personalities sparked a creative journey that naturally led to a rhyming book. From there, the idea expanded—why not build an entire cast of characters with poetry-inspired names like Sonnet and Stanza? A small, real-life encounter transformed into an imaginative adventure!

Another example is Little Bunny: Lost in Amsterdam, which began with a simple observation. While traveling through Amsterdam’s cooler months, Olivia jokingly told our mom that she looked like a bunny in her fluffy jacket. That tiny, passing comment planted the seed for a book about a little bunny navigating the city’s winding streets. What started as a fleeting moment of humor became the heart of a charming children’s story.

How to Find Your Own Story Idea

If you’re struggling to come up with a book idea, try this:

  1. Observe and Listen – Pay attention to conversations, interactions, and little quirks in daily life. Kids, pets, and even family traditions can be wonderful sources of inspiration.

  2. Ask ‘What If?’ – Take an ordinary moment and give it a twist. What if your dog had a secret adventure every time you left the house? What if your favorite snack had a hidden world inside it?

  3. Play with Words – A unique name, phrase, or joke can spark an entire story. Maybe you overhear a funny phrase or mispronunciation that could turn into a character or a title.

  4. Reimagine a Memory – Think about a childhood experience, a trip, or a funny incident. How could you reshape it into a story with a beginning, middle, and end?

  5. Follow Your Interests – Love baking? Animals? Outer space? Let your passions guide you. If you write about something you enjoy, your enthusiasm will shine through.

Start Small, Dream Big

The next time you’re searching for inspiration, don’t wait for a huge, groundbreaking idea. Instead, look closer at the small moments that make up everyday life. There’s a story waiting to be told in the laughter of a child, the antics of a pet, or even a cozy family tradition. You just have to be willing to see it.

So, grab a notebook, start observing, and let your imagination take flight—your next great picture book could be hiding in plain sight!
